Here we go!
Introduce yourself!
Name: Kevin Osmond
City/Town: Dartmouth, NS
Job: Certified Arborist
Hobby/Small Business: Recycled LP Records
Maritime Vinyl (MV) - What do you collect? Vinyl; CD’s;
Cassettes; 8 tracks; bootlegs; music memorabilia; magazine; etc..:
Keving Osmond (KO) - Vinyl, CD’s, Music DVD’s, Cassettes,
memorabilia
MV - Do you prefer one audio format more than others? (example:
vinyl more than cd’s):
KO - I enjoy music, so as long as it sounds good, I’m not that
picky between mediums. If I’m chilling at home, vinyl gets played, if I’m on
the road, Satellite is king and if I’m in the woods it`s MP3’s or the radio.
MV - What is your favourite genre of music? Some of your
favourite artists?:
KO - Hard rock/Alternative such as Smashing Pumpkins, Jane’s
Addiction, Guns ‘n Roses, Iron Maiden, Metallica, QOTSA, Motley Crue, The
Rheostatics and a good chunk of 70’s rock including Black Sabbath, Deep Purple,
April Wine, Pink Floyd...
MV - How big is your collection?:
KO - Approximately 3000 lps, several hundred CD’s, tapes and
MP3’s!
MV - Do you concentrate your collection on one or more artists
in particular?
KO - I buy, sell and trade lps for my personal collection of
70’s and 80’s Rock, however I buy and take donations of any damaged or prolific
lps for the purpose of recycling records into clocks, bowls and drink coasters
that I also sell at record fairs and online through www.recycledlprecords.com
MV - What is the first album you remember purchasing? Do you
still have it?
KO - 1984 on cassette by Van Halen. “Jump” was huge back then
and whenever I hear that tune, it brings me right back to stuff that was going
on at that time. I still have it.
MV - What is your favourite item in your collection?
KO - Smashing Pumpkins – Gish lp, Metallica – Ride the
Lightning lp
MV - Do you still actively collect or was this something you
concentrated on in the past?
KO - I collect now more than ever before and having friends
that are involved in organizing record fairs, spinning records, etc, helps with
the hobby.
MV - What is your preferred way of adding to your collection?
Shopping online? Flea Markets? Independent music stores? Etc… Any favourite
store or websites?:
KO - Online, record fairs, private sellers
MV - How do you store your collection? Shelves? Boxes? Your
attic?:
KO - Shelves and crates
MV – Does your significant other support your collection? Did
you have to convince him/her?:
KO - My wife loves music too and also gets adrenalized when I
come home with a new batch of lps!
MV - What is on your “wish list” at the moment?: Metallica and
Pumpkins lps.
MV - Do you know any other collectors?:
KO - Yes. A couple of them got me into collecting vinyl and
understanding the value of certain records.
MV - You mentioned to me that you buy and sell records. Where
do you do most of your business? Online? Record Store owner? Record Fairs?
KO - Record Fairs and private sellers, mostly.
MV - Do you find that it is getting more difficult to find
record collections?:
KO - If you’re in the loop or searching locally online it’s
fairly easy to find folks selling batches of lps.
MV - You also run a site at www.recycledlprecords.com . Here
you turn used vinyl records into bowls, coasters, clocks, etc.. Is there a big
demand for these items?:
KO - They are catching on. Folks who played records and want a
tangible piece of their musical past, but don’t necessarily want to rebuild
their record collection are searching for everyday-use memorabilia. The clocks,
bowls, record label and Indie coasters are equally popular and our newest
addition, record sleeve notebooks are gaining steam. It is a niche market, but
I am always racking my brains for new vinyl products that I can offer to a
wider audience. And I always bring along a good batch of recycled record
products to the record fairs too. See you all there.
